Torre de Belém

Small Wonders Model Makers was established in 2001 when work was commenced on a 1/40th scale model of a UNESCO World Heritage Site building standing in Lisbon, Portugal. This fortification, constructed between 1514 and 1520 was of paramount importance to protect Lisbon and the River Tagus estuary. Built on a Basalt outcrop close to the right bank of the estuary it formed a triangle of fortifications within the estuary. The 'Torre de Belém' when completed, established crossfire with the fortress of São Sebastian da Caparica (the Old Tower) on the opposite bank, Cascais's fortress on the right bank and itself standing out in the water of the estuary. However the southward creep of the right bank means the Torre de Belém now stands against the shore.

Following plans drawn up by King João II construction was commenced under the supervision of Chief Architect Francisco de Arruda. This building best reflects the pioneering spirit of Portugal during the age of discoveries. Covered as it is by Manueline decoration and naturalistic elements unseen in Europe at that time.

As a model subject it encompasses the periods of not only Portuguese use but those of Spanish and French occupation and British involvement during the Peninsular Campaign. As such it enables the figure collector or War Gamer to model a wide range of period uniforms and nationalities to display on the piece. Although strictly to 1/40th scale, various scales of figurine are at home on the model, indicated by the photographs within the gallery pages. 54mm (1/32nd) and 42mm (1/40th) are shown as examples.

The Torre de Belém was in use militarily from its conception until well after the Napoleonic Wars. Although by this time it had lost its function as a fortress, serving as it did as a military prison, barracks and even a lighthouse. The modeller has a 300yr span to choose from.

The model, when complete shows its classic Italian pentagonal fortress design with tall Gothic tower to the landward side and has a footprint of 90cm x 122cm and a height in excess of 90cm. As such it is a very impressive model. The issue of this model is strictly limited to 50.

The models resin construction has been developed from wood and plaster masters using cold cure silicones and various polyester resins. As far as possible, including such elements as the vaulted ceilings, the model is an accurate scale representation of the building as it stands today. The architects kindly provided copies of the drawings used for an extensive restoration of the Torre de Belém that took place during the 1990's. Together with these plans, sketches, photographs and measurements that were taken on three visits to the site a benchmark was set for the accuracy of the product range that was to follow. Accuracy in scale and quality of manufacture are by far the most important issues when researching an addition to the range. For example in the latest product to join the range the construction methods used in building the original structure have, within reason, been replicated in the model.

The model is available in sections or as a complete structure. But will be strictly limited to the numbers stated. Each will carry its unique number and will come with a matching certificate of authenticity.
